Teleclasses for Parents of Teenagers

Like these parents who recently completed their 4-week session of 1-hour teleclasses with Dr. Jeff Kaplan and parenting instructor Abby Lederman, you too can open your heart and mind to the possibilities of Love-Based parenting and develop a better relationship with your teen.

“I’ve read a lot of books about raising teenagers, but these classes are a lot better.  In books you don’t get personal attention or advice on how to handle a particular situation with your kid.”  Sandra Rogers, Colorado

“When I want to resign my position as a mother or fire my kid, the idea of love-based parenting keeps going through my mind, and I remember how much I love my son.”
Maria Flores, California

“If we didn’t have the knowledge we learned from this class, we wouldn’t have made it through last weekend.” Donna Koranda, Illinois

“I learned to ask my daughter, ‘What exactly is it you want and how can we make it happen?’ instead of fighting with her all the time.” Jim Koranda, Illinois

“Thanks to the excellent counsel and support of Dr. Kaplan and Abby Lederman, I am finding a new way to parent my son and miracles are happening.” Brenda Lex, Oregon

What is a Tele-class?

Tele-classes are the most convenient way to learn and gain knowledge in today’s hectic world. With state-of-the-art telephone conferencing technologies, you can have access to experienced parenting experts with just a simple telephone call each week. More than that, you and other parents will form a supportive community, sharing valuable information, ideas and experience with other callers.

Through a program designed for learning effectiveness, your instructor will facilitate you and other parents through a week-by-week class. There will be small lectures and new ideas from the instructor, and the best part of the tele-class is the discussion that you, the instructor and other parents have. Typically these classes will have between 5-10 people in attendance.

All you need to participate in a tele-class is access to a telephone, about one hour per week, a desire to learn, and to register. This is how simple it is to have access to leading experts and a community of fellow parents.

Basic Level: Love-Based Parenting I™ (4-weeks)

This course introduces you to the concepts of love-based parenting and gives them the foundation for increasing their parent effectiveness. This course gives insight into your teen's behaviors, your own parenting style, and provides tools to more effectively communicate and work with your child. This class is required before taking any advanced courses.

Week 1: Love-based vs. fear-based parenting

Have you ever wondered who took your sweet, compliant child and replaced him with this oppositional teenager who challenges every rule? During this first week, parents will be able to assess their parenting style and learn the difference between effective and ineffective styles of parenting. They will begin to see how they can respond differently to their teen to produce more positive results. The concept of proactive vs. reactive parenting will be introduced.

Week 2: Why teens misbehave
Have you ever asked your teen, "Why do you do it?" Well, during this class find out why. This week, parents will learn the 4 causes of misbehavior in children and teens plus 3 other reasons why teens misbehave. They will learn how to quickly identify the cause of misbehavior and how to help the teen satisfy his need in a positive way.

Week 3: Discipline that works
Ever have your teenager laugh at you when you told her she was grounded? In this class, parents will learn why punishment does not work and what to do instead. They will learn how to respond to teens when they do not comply with limits or consequences. Finally, parents will learn how to avoid power struggles and what to do if they get into a power struggle.

Week 4: Effective Communication
Have you ever ask your teen how was school and he says, "Fine." Then ask him what he did, only to hear, "Nothing." In this class, parents learn why teens tune out parents and how to talk with them so that they will listen. Parents learn how to talk with their teenager so that they become more responsible, independent, and loving.

Advanced Level: Love-Based Parenting II™ (4-weeks)

(For graduates of the 4-week Love-Based Parenting I Course)
The advanced course is designed for parents who already have a foundation in love-based parenting. This course will explore common parental concerns such as: school achievement, independence, self-esteem, peer pressure, bullying, sibling rivalry, drugs and alcohol, lying, and delinquency. The lessons in this course will be supplemented by interactive discussion among parents, who will join the instructor in brainstorming effective solutions to common parenting problems.

Week 1: School Achievement
Have you ever felt frustrated because you know your child is capable of much more than s/he is producing in school? In this class, parents will learn the various reasons for teenage underachievement in school, discuss other school-related issues, and brainstorm effective solutions.

Week 2: Special topics : drugs and alcohol, lying and stealing, sex, and delinquency
This class will focus on some of the more sensitive topics concerning parents of today’s teenagers. Participants will share concerns and together brainstorm effective strategies for managing these difficulty issues. The concept of "normal" teenage behavior will be discussed, as will the issue of how and when to intervene.

Week 3: Self-esteem and self-image
Low self-esteem is correlated with delinquency, drug abuse, and problems in school. This class will focus on discussing causes of a low self-esteem and poor self-image. Participants will learn how to avoid the trap of making the situation worse and brainstorm creative ways that actually work in helping teenagers experience sustaining positive feelings of self-regard.
